Winix WAC5500

The Winix WAC5500 PlasmaWave air cleaner is perfect for family rooms, bedrooms and all sorts of other living spaces up to 350 square feet in size. The most discerning feature about this model is the way Winix has combined the latest technology in order to bring cleaner and fresher air into the home. The 3 stage filtration system eliminates harmful bacteria, allergy enhancing particles and keeps the home free from odors.

Review Details

The pre-filter used with the WAC5500 is carbon activated and will trap larger particles such as lint, pet hair, pollen and dust. At this stage it will absorb odors emitted from pets and light smoke. The air is then passed through the true HEPA filter which removes allergens as small as 0.3 microns. Unlike many other models that make use of this technology, the true HEPA filter with the WAC5500 is washable; eliminating the expense of replacements.

The final stage of filtration is where the PlasmaWave technology kicks in. At this stage harmful gas, chemical vapors, airborne viruses and bacteria are actively neutralized. In addition to the advanced air cleaning system, this model also comes with various features such as quiet operation and remote control.

What We Liked

  • Advanced PlasmaWave Technology
Due to the PlasmaWave Technology, chemical vapors, gases, bacteria and viruses are neutralized so they’re not released into the room.
  • True HEPA Filter Technology
The WAC5500 is equipped with a washable true HEPA filter. This ensures that potentially harmful allergens are removed from the air.
  • Energy Star Rated
You can expect to make a saving of up to 40% on utility bills with this model compared to non-energy star rated purifiers.
  • Easy Operation
Not only does this model have a full functional remote control, the electronic push-button panel makes it easy to select one of the 4 speeds, offers a filter replacement indicator and will dim the lights when in sleep mode.
  • Air Quality Sensor
Take the guesswork out of knowing which speed is required because your WAC5500 will do this for you.

What We Didn't Like

  • No Timer
There is no programmable timer available with the WAC5500 which can aid with saving energy.
  • Automatic Sensor
Some users have reported that the automatic sensor does not start-up when the numbes of particles in the air increases. This feature with this model has been designed to start-up when odors become an issue.

Conclusion

Overall the Winix WAC5500 has been well received by consumers. Many have reported that it has made a huge difference to allergy problems and the air feels noticeably fresher. It is also very quiet, making it perfect for both adult and children’s bedrooms. The price tag is incredibly reasonable considering the amount of thought that has gone into the technology. For the money, we consider this a great buy.
