SPT TN-12E Portable Air Conditioner Review

Overall Rating:
3.8 out of 5 stars

SPT, also known as Sunpentown, has done away with the traditional look with their TN-12E portable air conditioner. It comes in silver and has a very modern, almost space-age look to it. This model has a capacity of 12000 BTU and is capable of both cooling and dehumidifying a room of up to 400 square feet in size. This makes it perfect for rooms in the home or office that have poor ventilation.

Review Details

One of the most discerning features about the TN-12E is the self evaporative technology that SPT has adopted. When the unit is in the cooling process, it extracts moisture from the air into the unit. This moisture is then used to cool the coils and various other parts within. This helps to make this air conditioner operate more efficiently and maximizes on the amount of energy that’s used.

It’s worth noting this model (unlike many other brands of this size on the market) will automatically dehumidify when it’s being used for air conditioning. It also has the option for continuous drainage, but where this isn’t possible the unit also has a built-in water tank.

What We Liked

  • Dry Cool Air
The SPT TN-12E eliminates the need to switch between cooling the air and drying it out. When in operation it will automatically remove moisture as well for added comfort.
  • Carbon Filter
In addition to keeping the air at a comfortable temperature, the TN-12E is also fitted with an activated carbon filter to help eliminate every-day odors.
  • Programmable Timer
You can choose between 1-12 hours with the included programmable timer meaning you get cool air on your own schedule.
  • Easy to Use Controls
The TN-12E has easy to use touch-button controls with a digital display and a remote control can be included for additional convenience (this review and price comparison is for the TN-12E without remote, but this model can also be bought with remote right here)

What We Didn't Like

  • Adequate Cooling
The SPT TN-12E is designed to operate in temperatures between 64 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit, however, some consumers have complained it does not bring the temperature down to their desired level.
  • Flimsy Window Installation Kit
It has been noted by some consumers that the window kit and hose with this model is not very sturdy. In some instances this has meant resorting to purchasing something that will stay in place.

SPT has taken a unique approach to keeping indoor air at a comfortable level during the summer months. By combining both dehumidification and air conditioning at the same-time this helps with energy consumption as well as overall comfort. However, it has to be said that certain aspects have been overlooked such as the installation kit and noise levels. If you’re looking to invest this sort of money, the DeLonghi PACN120E may be worth considering.
