Aprilaire 1710

If you’re worried about the amount of damage humidity is doing in the basement or crawl space in your home, the Aprilaire 1710 dehumidifier is the perfect answer. It may look like any other portable dehumidifier but it is far more powerful than the leading brands on the market. It has the ability to remove about 90 pints of moisture across a 2000 square foot space, and Aprilaire are proud to announce this model is made in the USA.

Review Details

The Aprilaire 1710 is in a class of its own and the statistics prove that. It has a 300% more operating efficiency and 100% more removal capacity than other leading brands on the market. At 65 degrees Fahrenheit and 65% relative humidity this little beast of a dehumidifier will remove upwards of 74 pints of moisture.

This means you can have peace of mind that the wood in your basement won’t rot, floor boards won’t start to buckle and support beams will remain in tip-top condition. Additionally the 1710 is fitted with a MERV 8 washable filter that will remove allergen triggering pollutants such as mold spores, dust particles and pet dander.
This really is a “set it and forget it” unit with 2 drainage options.

What We Liked

  • Two Drainage Options
Both of the drainage options with the 1710 are automatic. The first is the unique method of connecting the unit to your internal drainage system. The second is the gravity drainage option allowing you to remove water to a nearby drain.
  • Set It and Forget It
Fitted with an internal humidistat it’s possible to set the desired level of humidity on the 1710. Once set, the unit will do the rest for you.
  • Low Temperature Operation
The 1710 will operate in temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit. When frost starts to form, the condenser will automatically power off, allowing the internal fans to run until the coils have been defrosted.
  • Energy Efficient
The manufacturer claims the 1710 is 300% more efficient than other models of this type, so it will cost you less to run.

What We Didn't Like

  • Heavy
The Aprilaire 1710 weighs in at just over 90lbs which may mean you may need help when placing it in the desired position.
  • Noise Level
When working at its optimum level the 1710 will produce up to 54db in terms of noise level. For some consumers this is considered to be too loud.
  • No Pump
The size of this unit makes it perfect for use in crawl spaces, but you probably need an external pump to drain the water up to higher levels.

Aprilaire has done a fantastic job with the 1710 basement/crawl space dehumidifier. It comes with few “bells and whistles”, but Aprilaire has made up for this in efficiency at removing large amounts of moisture in a reasonable amount of time (which after all, is what a dehumidifier is for). It’s also very well priced. In fact, considering that repair bills on other models can come in at just under half what this unit costs new, it’s an excellent investment.
